Simulator Sickness Research Summary

چکیده
Simulator Sickness (SS) is a form of Motion Sickness (MS) that does not require true motion – but does require a wide field of view (FOV) visual display [5, 46, 64]. Like all varieties of MS, an intact vestibular system is necessary to experience SS [12]. It has been called visually induced motion sickness [3, 52, 48] and Cinerama sickness [3, 5, 52]. The term “vection” is used to describe a visually induced sense of self-motion. Vection is “... produced by the nearly uniform motion of a large part of the visual field ... When the entire field moves, subjects soon begin to feel that the relative motion is their own” (Young [64], p. 98). Whether found in a flight simulator, Cinerama theatre, IMAX theatre, or virtual reality simulation, vection causes a MS-like discomfort for a substantial minority of participants. This unpleasant experience is now universally referred to as SS. Further, these MS-like symptoms are now referred to as SS whether the simulator is a fixedbase model, and has no true motion, or a motion-base one with a (limited) range of movement. In other words, if the discomfort occurs in a simulator of any kind it will be called SS in the literature.

Simulator Sickness in a Virtual Environments Driving Simulator
Some users of virtual environments experience adverse effects known as simulator sickness. Common symptoms are generally grouped into nausea, oculomotor discomfort, and disorientation. This research examined whether the severity and type of simulator sickness differs due to the type of driving environment or the gender of the driver. Three environments with variations in driver workload were de...
متن کاملSimulator sickness during driving simulation studies.
While driving simulators are a valuable tool for assessing multiple dimensions of driving performance under relatively safe conditions, researchers and practitioners must be prepared for participants that suffer from simulator sickness. This paper describes multiple theories of motion sickness and presents a method for assessing and reacting to simulator sickness symptoms. Results showed that t...
متن کاملObjective Measurement of Simulator Sickness and the Role of Visual-Vestibular Conflict Situations
Driving simulators are becoming more and more important: for research and development purposes, but also for education, training and even for recreation. We have conducted a series of studies on a problem that often occurs with driving simulators: simulator sickness. This phenomenon closely resembles the classically experienced motion sickness and can make a user abort a simulator run within mi...

A physiological monitoring capability was developed for the Army's Crew Station Research and Development Facility (CSRDF), a research simulator for advanced rotorcraft. Preliminary physiological data are reported from studies of simulator-induced sickness. Our objective was to demonstrate sensitivity of physiological measures relative to self-reports of simulator sickness severity. The data sug...

OBJECTIVES Studies involving simulators are increasingly popular. We examined to what extent exposure to a variety of test conditions on the simulator affects the level of mood and severity of simulator sickness. In addition, we were interested in finding out to what degree the changes in mood are associated with the severity of the symptoms of simulator sickness. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twelve ...
